Silent Students

I student teach a fantastic group of 11th and 12th grade students. They’re smart, creative, and a lot of fun to be around. But they’re so quiet!!

So far the only way I’ve gotten them all to actively participate is to hand out numbered cards and pick numbers out of a bag as I ask questions. Which ever students’ number is picked has to answer the question or give an answer.

Today I gave them opportunities to participate by labeling and drawing things on the board. Once again, it was like pulling teeth to get volunteers. Two girls flat out refused when i asked them.

I hate forcing participation, but how else can I get them to volunteer?

Any suggestions? How do you get your students to participate?
